For well over 100 years Congregation Schomre Israel has been serving the Jewish community in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Situated in Poughkeepsie, New York the congregation boasts a long and renowned history of catering to the spiritual, cultural, educational and social needs of Jews of all ages.
Schomre Israel is a friendly, congenial, modern Orthodox congregation offering easy-to-follow services, a beautiful sanctuary, an active Sisterhood, various educational programs, a mikvah (call office for information on use) and a strong feeling of communal togetherness.
We would be happy to have the opportunity of showing you our facilities at your convenience.

To celebrate our 120th anniversary, Congregation Schomre Israel is planning a commemoration,
including a display of memorabilia, in the spring of 2008. The Orthodox Jewish community of
Schomre Hadath was founded in Poughkeepsie in 1888. By the turn of the century, another
synagogue, B'nai Israel (Children of Israel), was formed and, in 1965, the two synagogues
merged and called the new organization Congregation Schomre Israel. If anyone has pictures,
articles, or artifacts relating to past events at any of these three synagogues, we would
appreciate it if he would loan them to us for this exhibit. Please contact Shirley Koffman
at 471-9485 if you can help us.
Our synagogue is offering free membership to NEW members from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2008. Join now and pay nothing until Jan. 2009.
Annual membership dues are $350. There is a building fund of $360, payable over 5 years. Cemetery privileges are available.
For further information, please call Evelyn & Dave Horowitz at 452-5969.
Every Shabbat, a Kiddush of wine and
cake is served following services; however, once a month, an extended repast is served.
Everyone is welcome...you are never a stranger...come and experience our warm, friendly
synagogue.
